WTTC recently took part in the Wellcome Trust's 75th Anniversary Project, through a project to engage schoolchildren on Merseyside with the work of the Centre and its links with Malawi. Our partners at National Museums Liverpool also assisted in the project which saw the creation of a film, “Mission Malaria”, which involved children in Liverpool and Blantyre. We hope to bring you the film online soon. In the mean time Read More about our project.

Welcome to the Liverpool Wellcome Trust Tropical Centre which is a collaborative centre between the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and the University of Liverpool.

Established in 1995, the Wellcome Trust Tropical Centre (WTTC) supports research in the tropics, by providing support for ongoing international research in a wide range of specialist areas.  WTTC supports many successfully funded Fellowships and several international sites, but predominantly the Malawi Liverpool Wellcome (MLW) Trust Research Programme in Malawi.

The centre is also instrumental in recruiting and encouraging applicants for clinical and non-clinical Wellcome Trust Fellowships in Tropical Medicine.  These include response mode fellowships at different career stages, and also clinical PhD fellowships.

WTTC is under the directorship of Prof David Lalloo who is Professor of Tropical Medicine; Head of Clinical Group and Clinical Director at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine.

Malawi-Liverpool Wellcome (MLW) Programme

The most established and comprehensive link WTTC has, is with the Malawi-Liverpool Wellcome (MLW) Programme in Blantyre, Malawi.  Since its inception in 1996, MLW has become an internationally recognised centre for research and research training.  The programme has the following aims:

  • To conduct biomedical research on tropical health problems prevalent in the area
  • To provide training in research skills for clinical and laboratory scientists both from the host country and abroad
  • To strengthen the local institution (the College of Medicine), in its capacity to conduct research on health problems of local importance

As part of this process, it is essential to maintain high quality internationally competitive research; ensure that where possible novel discoveries are translated into clinical practice and policy; that existing and new collaborations are fostered both nationally and internationally; and that close partnerships are built with the University of Malawi College of Medicine and the Malawi Ministry of Health.

MLW is under the directorship of Professor Rob Heyderman. To watch an interview with Prof Heyderman please click here.
