Dr Peter MacPherson

Peter MacPhersonPeter has a background in international public health and researches community-based approaches to HIV and TB treatment provision in developing countries.  He is currently undertaking a randomised controlled trial of a Lay Healthcare Worker provided intervention to increase uptake of antiretroviral therapy for people with HIV in the primary health care system in Blantyre, Malawi. Dr MacPherson has recently returned from Malawi. Further details about Peter's study are available here.

Peter's Clinical PhD Programme Experience:

"I had previously worked in rural South Africa and identified a high rate of drop-out among HIV-infected patients waiting to start ART treatment. I had previously done some research work and wanted to undertake studies to clearly define this problem, and identify and trial potential solutions. So far, I have had a considerable number of achievements, including running the first ever cluster randomised trial to investigate strategies to improve linkage to antiretroviral therapy. Additionally, I have gained substantial experience in presentation and publishing, having now had 15 peer-reviewed manuscripts describing primary research accepted for publication.

As I come to the end of my Fellowship, the key achievement had been presenting my cluster-randomised trial results at the biggest global academic HIV conference (CROI). These results showed for the first time, an effective strategy to improve linkage to ART. The results have stimulated considerable international interest and I gave a press conference to release the results.

After my Fellowship, I am going to commence higher specialty training in Public Health in the UK (Cheshire and Merseyside rotation). I plan to use this time to develop a proposal for an higher level fellowship."
